ACTIVITY THERAPIST - San Diego Hospital
TITLE: ACTIVITY THERAPIST
DEPARTMENT: ACTIVITY THERAPY/CLINICAL SERVICES
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF ADJUNCTIVE THERAPY
STATUS: NON EXEMPT – PER DIEM AND FULL TIME
SUPERVISES: N/A

Position Summary: To serve as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, to provide therapeutic recreational and activity services to adult, adolescent, or child patients with emotional or substance abuse problems.

Essential Duties:
* Develops and implements activity therapy plans
* Maintains the clinical and administrative documentation for services rendered
* Participates in the effective allocation of department resources
* Requests supplies and equipment required for assigned activities
* Provides individual instruction for clients as required

Qualifications: Comprehensive knowledge of one or more activity areas such as recreation, occupational therapy, music, or arts and crafts; Comprehensive knowledge of individual and group behavior and effective ways of working with clients; Intermediate knowledge of the general nature of physical or mental illnesses/disabilities and/or developmental disabilities; Ability to apply and adapt skills and knowledge of activity areas to planned sessions of therapeutic activities; Ability to foster interest, initiative, responsibility, and experimentation in clients and discourage inappropriate responses; Ability to observe client behavior, record observations, and prepare reports; CTSR, ATR, MT-BC, drama therapy, or related disciplines preferred.

Physical Requirements: Ability to stoop, crouch, reach, stand, and lift up to 50 pounds.

Essential Duties:

* Respond to routine and crisis calls coming into the Intake Department
* Assess patients for suicidality, homocidality and other dangerous propensities
* Provide Axis I-IV DSM diagnoses in consultation with the psychiatrist
* Complete managed care authorizations for patient treatment
* Interface with other hospital departments in arranging patient care
* Ability to work independently and as part of a cohesive team
* Handling of legal issues related to patient care, such as 5150 criteria, conservatorships, minors’ issues
* Computer tasks that require use of Microsoft Work, Excel, Internet Explorer and other computer programs

Essential Duties:
• Actively serves as a key member of the organization's core management team, ensure effective integration of nursing services into overall organization operations.
• Carries out the personnel management activities associated with direct staff supervision, including screening and selection, orientation training and development, performance management, and employee relations functions.
• Serves as the department's fiscal manager.
• Provides clinical supervision in psychiatric nursing care to nursing staff.
• Communicates with referral sources and family members in patients' interest.

Qualifications at Entry:

Advanced or thorough knowledge of psychiatric and general nursing care concepts and methodologies and demonstrated skill in their implementation; supervisory and basic personnel management skills; skills in policy and procedure development and implementation; basic teaching or training skills; skills in analysis, evaluation, and interpretation, organization, prioritization, and time management skills; sound written and oral communication skills; adaptability and flexibility; track record as team player; clinical evaluation and intervention skills, including crisis management; detail-oriented, balanced with ability to see whole clinical and organizational picture and make sound clinical and administrative judgments and decisions; independence; working knowledge of, and skills in maintaining therapeutic milieu; skills in maintaining information as highly confidential.

• Provides group and family process-oriented therapies as well as conducts educational and other didactic groups for patients and family members using various professional treatment modalities.
• Develops and coordinates an individualized discharge plan for the patient by utilizing treatment team and chart information to determine the patient's aftercare needs.
• Identifies and assesses family or community resources such as, group homes, or mental health practitioners to meet patients' aftercare needs.
• Attends regular treatment team meetings to provide social work perspective to total case management of the patient by reading and discussing written progress notes from charts and communicating any state or local agency legal requirement for case management with the interdisciplinary team.
• Reports to community/state agencies any patient issues as required and represents facility in any legal proceedings.
• Provide backup services for incoming assessment and referral calls.

Qualifications: LCSW/MFT REQUIRED; masters degree in social work or equivalent masters degree in a recognized mental health field; experience with chemical dependency and relapse prevention preferred; written and oral communications skills, skills in case management, time management, and crisis intervention common to acute psychotic as well as to non-violent crises intervention practice.
